FBU calls on membership to back Labour reaffiliation

FIREFIGHTERS are to vote on reaffiliating to Labour following Jeremy Corbyn’s landslide victory in the party’s leadership election on a socialist manifesto.

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) severed its link to the party in 2004 after a bitter dispute over pay under the Blair government.

The Labour media office told the Morning Star yesterday that it would be “inappropriate” to comment on the FBU’s decision to reconsider its position on affiliation.

A one-day FBU conference will take place in Blackpool on November 27.

The union was one of the first to voice support for Mr Corbyn’s candidacy in the leadership election. The union’s leaders are recommending reaffiliation to the party.

FBU general secretary Matt Wrack said: “We have seen a remarkable turn of events during the summer which we hope will change the political landscape to make for a fairer, more just Britain.

“The Labour leader is fully and unreservedly pro-trade unions.

“Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell have supported the FBU for many years.

“In fact, more than a decade ago, they co-founded the FBU’s parliamentary group, of which they are still both members.”

Tony Blair’s right-wing Labour leadership caused a rift in the party’s links with the trade union movement, including the expulsion of transport union RMT from affiliation.

Mr Blair, now a multimillionaire, is currently under scrutiny for his role in launching the United States-led illegal war on Iraq in 2003.
