Pakistan: China’s Xi unveils big investment

CHINESE President Xi Jinping arrived in Pakistan yesterday for a two-day visit and revealed $45 billion (£30bn) worth of investment projects in energy and infrastructure development.

Pakistan’s Planning and Development Minister Ahsan Iqbal said that the announcement of the investment projects amounted to “proof of our great bond with China.”

He said that around $37bn (£25bn) of the investment would be in energy.

Mr Iqbal said that work on $28bn (£19bn) worth of projects could begin immediately, with the remainder starting in the next three to five years.

He called the agreements a “milestone in our history.”

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif predicted that the visit would open a new chapter in bilateral relations.

Mr Sharif told the heads of three Chinese companies: “We will work hand in hand with you to remove any obstacle in your way to ensure timely completion of the planned projects.”
