EU-friendly protesters in Moldova get two parties’ backing

TWO political parties in Moldova have given their support to protesters in the capital Chisinau demanding regime change.

Eurosceptic Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) leader and former communist Igor Dodon and Our Party leader Renato Usatii called on Moldovans to join the protest “regardless of nationality or political preference.”

The PSRM holds 24 seats in the 101-member parliament, but Our Party has none. The Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova, with 21 seats, supports the coalition government on a confidence-and-supply basis.

A hundred tents have been erected in a main square and a few hundred people protested yesterday, two days after up to 100,000 called on the government, the central bank governor, the general prosecutor and others to resign.

The protests have been organised by the supposedly non-partisan Dignity and Truth movement, whose leaders include pro-EU academics.

They were sparked by the apparent disappearance of about £1 billion from three Moldovan banks last year, prompting calls for an investigation.
