Ecuador: Rivadeneira ‘received letter bomb’

ECUADOR’S parliamentary speaker said on Wednesday that she narrowly escaped death when she received a parcel bomb.

National Assembly president Gabriela Rivadeneira said the device was sent to her offices concealed in a DVD case marked: “Who is behind the corruption? Irrefutable proof.”

It did not explode and was being investigated by the state prosecutor’s office.

Head of security Victor Hugo Zarate said it contained two powerful, high-grade explosives: RDX and Pentaerythritol tetranitrate, known as PENT.

Ms Rivadeneira called for greater respect and tolerance, tweeting: “Independently of whatever political difference, what must take precedence is life and respect for the integrity of all human beings.”

The attempt on Ms Rivadeneira’s life came just four days before presidential elections, which left-wing President Rafael Correa’s party comrade Lenin Moreno is favourite to win.
