CWU welcomes opportunity to give evidence in postal competition inquiry

THE Communication Workers Union (CWU) welcomed yesterday the opportunity to give evidence to a parliamentary committee’s investigation into competition in Britain’s postal industry.

The business, innovation and skills select committee called on the union to give evidence on competition and the universal service obligation along with Royal Mail, TNT and industry regulator Ofcom.

Committee chairman Adrian Bailey MP said the inquiry would examine the impact of competition to parcel delivery.

CWU general secretary Billy Hayes said: “We have seen the damaging effects of unregulated competition in Royal Mail delivery centres firsthand in areas where companies such as TNT are operating. The impact of competition does call in to question how long Royal Mail will be able to deliver the universal postal service if competition continues to grow at its current rate.”
