SALFORD City Council staff donated 1,100 kilograms of food to help victims of government austerity over Christmas, it was revealed yesterday.

The city in Greater Manchester suffers some of the worst levels of unemployment and deprivation in Britain and, as a result, a string of food banks had sprung up to assist the worst-off, including victims of benefit sanctions.

An Asian restaurant provides free meals once a week, supported by Salford trade unionists.

The council launched an appeal for donations of food from the public and its own staff, who responded generously.

“Their donations have already made a difference to many people in the city — and their gifts will keep on giving through winter,” said Assistant Mayor Paul Dennett.

“It’s dreadful that we need to launch such an appeal in Britain in the 21st century but I am grateful to everyone for their support.”
