Iraq: Troops take prison where Isis killed 600

IRAQI troops captured an infamous prison to the west of Mosul from Isis fighters yesterday, cutting the death cult’s lines to nearby Tal Afar.

Government soldiers advanced to the southern bank of the Tigris river at Badoush in northern Iraq, recapturing blocks of flats and the prison. Isis executed 600 Shi’ite inmates at Badoush prison when it took Mosul in 2014.

There were unconfirmed reports yesterday that government troops and Shi’ite Popular Mobilisation Units militia were ready to storm Tal Afar — news bound to enrage neighbouring Turkey, which asserts that the town’s Turkmen population is under its protection.

Meanwhile, troops advanced to within 900 yards of the main government complex in west Mosul after securing one of the city’s five bridges — bombed by US planes last year.
