LABOUR MSP Neil Findlay slammed SNP supporters’ “outrageous” behaviour yesterday after scuffles broke out when comedian Eddie Izzard campaigned for Labour in Glasgow.
Mr Izzard appeared with Scottish Labour leader Jim Murphy only to be drowned out by nationalists who branded Mr Murphy a “traitor.”
But the comedian asked: “Why violence? They should let the democratic process happen, we’re asking people to vote Labour and they’re scared of these words being heard.”
People carrying SNP posters had shouted “red Tories out” as they confronted the pair, a label Mr Findlay branded nonsense.
“We’re going to improve rights at work, set up an inquiry into blacklisting and review the cases of miners arrested during the Great Strike — none of that’s in the SNP manifesto,” he said.
And Mr Findlay told the Star: “We’ve entered a post-irrational politics where people aren’t comparing policy, they just assume everything the SNP says is true and everything Labour says is a lie.
“We’re told we’re seeing a flourishing of democracy and political engagement.
“If this is what they mean by flourishing democracy it’s not something I want to be part of. It’s ugly.”
Communist Party Scottish secretary Tommy Morrison added: “Rather than shouting abuse, nationalists should address the contradictions in their own party where, despite anti-austerity rhetoric, policies such as support for the EU tie them into the neoliberal agenda.
“What’s lacking is clear class politics that opposes all cuts in public spending and taxes the rich to pay for it.”
