DOZENS of people were hurt yesterday when a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s easternmost West Papua province.
The quake hit 17 miles north of Sorong, home to 220,000 people, just before 1am.
Hundreds of people fled their homes and at least 39 people were hurt, mostly with broken bones, said local disaster official Petrus Korisano. About 260 building were damaged.
Hundreds of people were taken to emergency shelters as the authorities surveyed the damage.
The panic extended to Manokwari, 195 miles to the west of the epicentre and home to 286,000 people.
Hundreds of patients from at least one hospital in the city had to be evacuated, some in wheelchairs or with drips attached, said disaster official Burhanudin.
An official from Indonesia’s Meteorology and Geophysics Agency, Budi Waluyo, said the underwater quake had no potential to generate tsunami waves along nearby coasts.
