COLOMBIA’S President Juan Manuel Santos extended a suspension of air attacks on Farc rebels on Thursday amid a day of peace marches.
Thousands of marchers waved white flags and paraded across the country to support talks between the government and Farc (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) guerillas and pay tribute to victims of the nation’s half-century of conflict.
Mr Santos, alongside victims of the fighting, led more than 8,000 people through Bogota.
Farc implemented a unilateral ceasefire in December last year, which has been independently verified by human-rights activists, and Mr Santos said the Ministry of Defence had confirmed that Farc was abiding by the unilateral ceasefire.
He announced a one-month extension of the ceasefire order he gave in March, suspending air attacks on Farc camps.
The two parties have been in negotiations in Havana on ending their conflict since 2012. A new round of talks began yesterday.
