United lacking ‘composure’ admits Rooney

by Michael McCann

WAYNE ROONEY wants to see Manchester United be more ruthless in front of goal, starting against league leaders Leicester tomorrow evening.

The Red Devils can move above the Foxes and into first place with a win but face a Leicester side that have scored in every game so far this season.

Surprise leaders Leicester have won five from their last six league games while United are unbeaten in nine across all competitions, though have only scored six goals in their last eight games, including four goalless draws, the most recent being at home to PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.

And for United to go top, club captain Rooney stressed that they must show more composure in front of goal.

“No, we’re not,” the United captain said when asked if his team were ruthless enough.

“I think we need to score more goals as a team.

“I feel we showed a lack of composure which put ourselves under pressure a lot of times.

“It’s a learning curve for us but we can’t go on saying it’s a learning curve. We have to start turning these games into victories.”

Wednesday’s goalless draw against PSV left United needing to win away against Wolfsburg on December 8 to guarantee qualification into the final 16 of the Champions League or face dropping down to the Europa League.

Jesse Lingard wasted United’s best opportunity 16 minutes from time as the hosts controlled possession and territory but rarely got in behind Eindhoven, who won the reverse fixture between the two 2-1.
