LABOUR should hold a special conference to determine its position on the forthcoming EU referendum, two affiliated trade unions have urged.
General union GMB has updated its Labour Party conference motion, which is guaranteed a slot on the floor as one of four union choices, to include a call for Labour’s campaign strategy to be approved by grassroots delegates when the date of the vote is set.
The demand is echoed in a similar motion from food workers’ union BFAWU.
GMB leader Paul Kenny told TUC Congress last week that the labour movement should end support for the EU if Prime Minister David Cameron further negotiates away workers’ rights.
GMB’s motion “opposes working with any campaign or faction … which supports or advocates cutting employment or social rights.”
This will be seen as an attempt to learn the lessons of the Scottish independence referendum, during which Labour was criticised for working with the Tories.
