Activists to mark 2014 attack by police

SOUTH Yorkshire’s Freedom Riders will mark the first anniversary of a police attack on free transport protesters with another demonstration, they announced yesterday.

On June 23 last year, the Freedom Riders were “kettled” by officers at Sheffield railway station but staged a demonstration on the platform.

Police attacked the protesters and arrested two of the Freedom Riders’ leaders.

All charges of obstruction and fare evasion were later dropped for lack of evidence, but the Freedom Riders are demanding answers to complaints they made about the police action.

They will stage the anniversary demonstration at Sheffield station on Tuesday at 12 noon.

“The Freedom Riders will be protesting that, one full year after the events in Sheffield, official complaints made to the transport police at the time are still being investigated and no effective action has been taken,” said Tony Nuttall, who was arrested last June along with George Arthur.

“I and other people who complained get a regular letter telling us that the transport police are still investigating themselves, but we never hear any outcome.”
