A huge day of racing at Newmarket with of course the showpiece being the Cesarewitch Handicap over two-and-a-quarter miles at 3.50 in which the draw plays such a huge part.
It’s always a tough race to sort out but I shall be having a solid each-way call on Communicator who has been crying out for a return to this kind of test.
The way he made up bundles of ground in the last three furlongs to finish a closing third in the Chester Cup way back in May after having to come around a wall of horses is still fairly fresh in my mind.
There are three factors in his favour here — firstly he has been handed a nice draw, secondly he arrives here a relatively fresh horse when others have had a long and hard season and thirdly he remains unexposed over this kind of distance.
There are of course bundles of dangers in a race which has thrown up some big-priced winners and placed horses in the past.
I think we will see last year’s sixth Jonny Delta run well as will Big Easy who has been laid out for this and has a much better draw than last year and he looks destined for the frame as long as the ground doesn’t dry out too much.
One horse that does need the sun to shine and for it to stay dry is Ray Ward who has been given a horrendous draw out in the car park, but if there is a fast pace on he could still go well and I think that the bookmakers have over reacted to his bad stall position pushing him out to 16/1 although I think we may even get a bigger price this afternoon.
Of the remainder of the field, the lightly raced Nearly Caught has solid claims being unexposed as a stayer, while the likes of the three-year-old Groovejet and Noble Silk should also go well in a real conundrum of a contest.
The rest of the card is just as tough but I am very keen on backing Albasharah in the Severals Stakes at 2.40. This scopey mare will only be having her second start and her third behind Hadaatha now looks even better after that filly’s exploits on Arc weekend.
Future Empire should prove hard to beat in the Autumn Stakes at 2.05, while I have a strong each-way fancy for Kikonga in the finale at 5.40. I think we have yet to see the very best of this Danehill Dancer filly and the return to a faster surface off her falling mark could see her go well at a double-figure price.
Elsewhere, at York the Easyodds “The Odds Comparison App” Stakes at 4.45 may well go to the three-year-old Kashmiri Sunset, a good running on fourth in the Melrose Stakes and made for this step up to an extended two-and-a-quarter miles.
The best bet at Wolverhampton in the evening is the three-year-old Random in the opening sprint at 5.50.
