Light of the World has chance to shine bright

Our tipster casts his expert eye over the pick of the weekend’s meets

All eyes will quite rightly be on Sprinter Sacre when he contests the Clarence House Chase at Ascot at 3.00 and there is every reason to believe that if he is on good terms with himself he should make a winning comeback.

However, there could be three reasons to oppose him. Firstly, he has yet to race under conditions where he will be asked to put in an effort since his heart problem, took a liberty with one of his fences in a gallop at Newbury a couple of weeks ago, but was never put under pressure.

Secondly, how deep will Barry Geraghty truly ask him to dig should he get embroiled in a battle?

And finally, how much of his awesome ability does he really retain after 386 days off the track?

It really is a conundrum and everyone, me included, would love to see him return as good as ever and blow the opposition away.

However, the percentage call has to be to play against the mighty horse and in Twinlight he has a match-fit rival, at the top of his game and from a leading stable.

I am sure that Willie Mullins would have weighed up the pros and cons in sending his eight-year-old over from Ireland and at 5/1 he merits a small wager to ruin the fairytale return ahead of Dodging Bullets.

The remainder of the card looks tough as you would expect but stepped up to three miles I strongly fancy Bitofapuzzle to land the mare’s hurdle at 1.50.

She was unlucky to be caught in the closing stages at Haydock but a more forceful ride would have seen her win and compensations awaits here at the main expense of Carole’s Spirit.

Later on, I am going to take an each-way chance that Royal Rebellion, dropped 2lbs since his last run at Wincanton, can jump his rivals to sleep in the 3.35.

There is a load of pace on here so it should be a good test of stamina and the deeper the ground the better for this 10-year-old.

Haydock’s feature betting race is the Peter Marsh Handicap Chase due off at 3.15 and this is sure to be a rare old slog in the mud.

Second last year, I think that Vintage Star can go one better for Sue Smith especially as he is racing off a really appealing mark.

The biggest danger could come from the David Pipe trained Amigo who with his claimer on board is outstandingly well handicapped and in turn is preferred to Samstown and No Planning.

Elsewhere, on the sand at Lingfield, Yeeoow has an outstanding chance of coming form off the pace in the big spring handicap at 2.00, while 35 minutes later Miracle of Medinah has been given a massive chance of defying the assessor.

However, the best bet of the day could come in the finale at Lingfield in which Light of the World finally gets a chance to run over a suitable trip at 3.45.
