Free advice hub opens to offset Tory attack on legal aid

LAWYERS in Manchester launched a free legal advice centre yesterday to counter the effects of the government’s vicious attack on legal aid.

The Tories removed legal aid eligibility from many areas of civil law in 2012, including huge parts of family, employment and education law, some welfare and benefits law and much of immigration law, leaving thousands of people without legal advice and representation.

Greater Manchester Law Centre Steering Group is to open a centre offering free legal advice and representation and has appealed for donations.

Steering group member Tanzil Chowdhury said women had been affected the most.

“Most reports have said the cuts have been devastating,” he said.

“Laws protecting people’s rights are all good and well but without means of legal representation to enforce them, people simply do not have these rights.”
