TENNIS: Heather Watson will return to the world’s top 100 today after winning the Sparta Prague Open.
The Guernsey player defeated Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 7-6 (7/5) 6-0 in the final to win her second title of the year on the ITF circuit, the level below the WTA Tour.
The title and ranking boost is the perfect birthday present for Watson, who turns 22 today.
ATHLETICS: Great Britain claimed two silver medals and a bronze at the ICF World Cup in Racice in the Czech Republic yesterday.
Olympic bronze medallist Liam Heath finished second in the K1 200 while Rachel Cawthorn and Lani Belcher added another silver in the K2 200 category.
Belcher later claimed her second individual bronze of the weekend in the K1 5000.
FOOTBALL: Roy Hodgson has announced that midfielder Frank Lampard will be England’s vice-captain at this summer’s World Cup.
The 35-year-old Chelsea star, who has won 103 international caps and been named captain six times, was skipper when England were last in Brazil a year ago.
“He brings a lot of other things to us in terms of his leadership qualities and characteristics,” said Hodgson.
FOOTBALL: A barrier collapsed yesterday injuring fans during the Spanish game between Osasuna and Real Betis.
Play had to be stopped in the 12th minute when fans spilled onto the pitch as they celebrated the opening goal of the game, breaking a part of the barrier in the process.
At least three fans had to be stretchered off by paramedics at the game while Betis player Alfred N’Diaye carried a young fan to safety.
The game was restarted once the barrier was fixed.
