Eoin Morgan said on Sunday night that a three-wicket defeat by New Zealand will not cause England to change their new aggressive approach to one-day cricket.

The visitors took a 2-1 lead in the series after winning at The Rose Bowl with an over to spare through centuries from Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor.

Williamson and Taylor profited from three dropped catches put on 206 for the third-wicket, the largest partnership for New Zealand in an ODI against England.

England had collapsed from 288-5 to 303 all out in 45.2 overs, leaving 28 balls unused though Morgan is adamant that missed chances in the field were more problematic.

“It would have taken something special with the ball to win this game and it was a matter of breaking one crucial partnership,” he said.

“The dropped catches were more critical — not batting the overs didn’t really bother me.

“We could have batted 50 overs, got 250 and I would have been very furious.

“I was happy we scored 300 in the manner that we did and want to continue playing with that attacking mindset.

“Because we’re changing the mindset, it will take longer than one series to do so.”
