Javid refuses to talk to Unite about strike compromise

TORY business secretary Sajid Javid slapped down a bid to reach a compromise over strike ballots yesterday, branding unions “bullies.”

Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said the union would accept a 50 per cent turnout threshold in strike ballots — if workplace voting is legalised.

But Mr Javid slammed the door in the union’s face by twice singling out Mr McCluskey for attacks in his conference speech.

Defending dracponian turnout thresholds, he said: “For too long, trade unions have been able to bully working people by striking even though only a small number of their members have voted for strike action.”

TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady hit back, saying the Trade Union Bill is the “real bullies’ charter.”

“Attacking the right to strike will allow Britain’s worst bosses to get away with bullying and mistreating their staff,” she said.
