FIFA confirmed yesterday that neither beleaguered president Sepp Blatter nor the organisation’s general secretary Jerome Valcke would be attending the showpiece final of the Women’s World Cup in Canada.
The 79-year-old president would usually present the trophy to the winning captain at the tournament’s close but speculation has been rife that the boss would be forced to miss out on the trip to North America due to the ongoing investigations into the governing body.
Reportedly under FBI investigation himself, Blatter has presented the trophy at every Women’s World Cup final since he became president in 1998.
But a statement from Fifa confirmed his non-attendance: “Due to their current commitments in Zurich, the Fifa president and the Fifa secretary general will remain at the Fifa headquarters.”
Instead, Fifa senior vice president Issa Hayatou of Cameroon will present the World Cup trophy to the winner of Sunday’s game, The New York Times reported on Tuesday.
