North London council workers strike again

COUNCIL workers in Barnet will strike for 24 hours next Wednesday against the privatisation of their jobs.

Members of public-sector union Unison working as coach escorts, drivers, social workers, occupational therapists, schools catering staff, education welfare officers, library workers, children’s centre workers, street cleaners and refuse workers will join the action.

Pickets will be in action at North London Business Park (7am), Mill Hill Depot (6am), and East Finchley library (9am).
Strikers and disability rights campaigners will lobby Parliament at 1pm.

Unison branch secretary John Burgess said: “Our members don’t want to work for an employer which will have to place the shareholders’ demands before local residents’ needs. Our members don’t want to work for an employer which uses zero-hours contracts. Our members don’t want to work for an employer which will not pay the London living wage as a basic minimum.”

Barnet Council has contracted out several public services and introduced new charges.
