RBS ‘abandons community banking’ with branch cull

RBS has “abandoned community banking” in shutting down dozens of local branches, union reps have warned.

Unite, which represents counter workers in the majority state-owned Royal Bank of Scotland, savaged bosses for pushing through 65 closures in just a year.

The union warned that the closures would have a particularly powerful impact on Scottish communities hit by waves of redundancies following the decline of heavy industry.

The union’s deputy Scottish secretary Mary Alexander said: “These ongoing closures make a mockery of the RBS motto ‘making everyday banking easy’ and show a clear abandonment of their customer charter commitment to maintain the ‘last bank in town.’

“Branches in these areas are often a first point of contact for people who have been made redundant.

“The abandonment of community banking by RBS, a position at odds with the public image sold in the aftermath of the financial crash, shows that people are an increasingly distant second place to the pursuit of profit across our financial sector,” she said.
