[Tablets]
Lucy Mercer
… with their blood I dyed the mountain red as red wool,
while the ravines and torrents swallowed the rest of them [ ] – Ashurnasirpal II
I must face them & show the other
animals my power
I will not be dumb like the
fossil
but wrench open the meteorite jaw
and with its determinism
my temple will sing.
*
A certain time of day
where things begin to animate themselves:
cups are no more than hollows
my clothes feel like dried plants
even the walls of this house –
though built for gods –
seem only made of earth.
Lucy Mercer's poems have recently been published in Ambit (218) and Oxford Poetry (Summer 2014).
