Film: Carrie (15)

Remaking a classic can prove a poisoned chalice

Carrie (15)

Directed by Kimberly Peirce

Remaking a classic can prove a poisoned chalice and none more so when it is Brian De Palma's 1976 iconic horror film Carrie.

A deranged and blood-soaked Sissy Spacek seeking deadly retribution on her bullying classmates at the high school prom is unforgettable.

Kimberly Peirce's Carrie is virtually identical to De Palma's, with a few modern touches and an absence of gratuitous nudity.

This could be due to Lawrence D Cohen, who penned the original screenplay and co-wrote this one.

Chloe Grace Moretz plays the shy teenager with telekinetic powers who is hounded by her peers and dominated by her deeply religious and disturbed mother, portrayed admirably by Julianne Moore. Although she gives a decent performance, Moretz lacks the fragility and geeky quirkiness of Spacek.

This may be a perfectly fine adaptation of Stephen King's novel for a new generation of cinemagoers who've never seen De Palma's Carrie but for those who have it could prove to be disappointing and a serious case of deja vu.
