Critical US report rejected by China

CHINA bitterly rejected a Pentagon report today that focused on increases in military spending but failed to realise that the country’s military is a “force for world peace.”

China’s armed forces were for defending the country’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, insisted Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei.

“We hope the US can shake off bias, view the development of China’s defence capability objectively and rationally, stop issuing the relevant reports and make concrete efforts in China-US military co-operation,” Mr Hong said.

He added that China viewed the US Defence Department annual report to Congress about China as unwarranted interference in its internal affairs and a smear on its reputation.

China announced a 12.2 per cent increase in military spending to £79 billion in March, the second-highest defence budget for any nation — but well behind the US, which spent £358bn on its military over the last year.
