Fulham 1-1 Huddersfield
by Kaleem Aftab
at Craven Cottage
LAST minute goals to gain a point are usually met with unmitigated happiness.
So it was bizarre when Fulham substitute Cauley Woodrow smashed home an equaliser and sections of the crowd began their most vociferous chant of “Symons out” on Saturday.
“I was just pleased to see the goal go in,” said Symons of the reaction. “I understand the reaction. It’s not nice that it happens. It’s part of life.
“I didn’t think it was a good game at all. We got ourselves luckily back into the game and maybe scoring in the last minute is the bit of luck we need to get the season going. I’m disappointed with the points return.”
Tension had been building on a hot summer’s day by the river in a game of what can best be described as slow-motion football. A dross affair was lifted in the 63rd minute when Nahki Wells lashed home for the visitors.
Chris Powell was left ruing missing out on “the first win that we were after but it’s three unbeaten.”
Symons, who has bought eight players in the summer, says that he’s still looking to buy more players this week to address weaknesses.
“We didn’t show it today but we have a lot of craft and guile. Some of our more creative players didn’t show that creativity.
It’s probably more a strength issue I would say.”
