A magnificent comeback by the Leeds Rhinos at Hull FC kicked off round four of the Super League, as the Loiners maintained their 100 per cent record despite being 12-0 down at half time.
In a typical game of two halves, Hull might have been disappointed to go in at half-time just 12-points ahead but after the break they looked bereft of ideas and couldn’t stop their opposition running riot.
Leeds racked up 43 unanswered points in this second period and the win took them back to the top of the table ahead of St Helens, who also maintained their perfect start to the season with a 20-16 win at Wakefield.
French rugby fans were treated to a thrilling encounter in Perpignan, as the home side Catalans Dragons drew 40-40 with Salford Red Devils.
The home fans will be disappointed with referee Phil Bentham, however, after he awarded a controversial penalty to Salford in the last minute of the game.
Full back Morgan Escare didn’t hear the call of “held” so carried on running. But instead of asking the Frenchman to go back and play the ball, Bentham awarded the penalty. Josh Griffin slotted over the kick from just to the right of the posts and the teams shared the spoils.
After the game, Catalans coach Laurent Frayssinous expressed his disappointment with the decision, commenting: “My thoughts are that it is not a penalty, I saw the last four rounds and it has happened that the teams go back and play the ball.
“We should have had one more point in the league — we should have six points tonight and we have only five so I don’t know what the RFL will do because it happens every season for the Dragons.”
Over at The Jungle, the Castleford Tigers devoured a Wigan Warriors side 42 points to 14, with winger Justin Carney grabbing a pair of tries to put him top of the league’s try scoring charts with six in total.
Meanwhile, Huddersfield picked up their first win of the season in a 24-12 triumph against Widnes in one of the other Friday night match-ups.
The only Sunday game took place in Warrington, as the Wolves came from behind twice to beat Hull KR 32-24. Tries from Gary Wheeler and a second from Matty Russell eventually secured the win and with five minutes to go Ben Currie went half the length of the pitch to round things off.
