BATTLE of Cable Street veteran Max Levitas hit the big 100 on Sunday — in the company of political luminaries from Britain and Ireland.
Mr Levitas, a long-standing Communist Party activist in Hackney and Tower Hamlets, celebrated his 100th birthday at the Whitechapel Ideas Store.
Present to congratulate him among an audience of 100 were Communist leader Rob Griffiths, Labour MP Rushanara Ali, TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady and Manus O’Riordan of the Irish International Brigades and the International Brigades Memorial Trust.
Mr O’Riordan even read out a personal letter from Irish President Michael Higgins, in which he warmly congratulated Mr Levitas.
His niece Ruth Levitas introduced his life of political work, which saw him take his family from Ireland to Britain, struggling for the working class throughout.
Mr Levitas fought at Cable Street and continues to talk about the lessons learned from that famous anti-fascist victory.
Max himself gave a rousing speech, urging all who attended to continue the struggle and insisted on taking up a collection for the Star.
