Half of disabled people unable to find work

TRADE unionists called yesterday for greater equality for people living with disabilities after figures revealed nearly half cannot find work.

According to the TUC and the Labour Force Survey, a 30 per cent employment gap between disabled and able-bodied workers since 2008.

In a new manifesto to battle employment discrimination against disabled people, the TUC is calling for a series of adjustments including an effective implementation of the government’s Access to Work programme.

“Far from being a friend of disabled workers, this government has shown its true colours by a series of measures that have hit them in the home, in the workplace and in education,” said TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady.

“Disabled people deserve a fair deal at work and the chance to participate and progress in all areas of life.”

Disabled People Against Cuts welcomed the new policy, arguing it was “definitely time to get disability equality firmly back on the political agenda.”
