Wales: ‘Pro-TTIP ministers complicit in privatising NHS’

THE government would be complicit in privatising the Welsh NHS if it failed to tackle the shady EU-US trade pact TTIP, a Plaid Cymru MEP warned yesterday.

Jill Evans demanded that back-door privatisation of the NHS be blocked as thousands of people prepared to collect signatures against the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership during a day of action organised by the 38 Degrees campaign.

The US-EU free trade treaty currently under secret discussion would allow transnational companies to sue the government for profit losses if it introduced new laws in favour of workers and the environment.

“It is clearly wrong that a treaty which will impact upon more than 700 million people … should be drawn up in secret,” said Ms Evans.

“We don’t yet know how any of this would impact on a devolved government like Wales, but we do know that the British government is strongly in favour of this treaty.”
