FBU lobbying Parliament over cuts to fire brigades

FIREFIGHTERS will converge on the Commons today to demand that MPs stand up for the future of the fire and rescue service amid huge concerns about public safety.

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) said the service was facing the worst cuts in its history. Since 2010, the government has slashed fire brigades’ budgets by 30 per cent, axing more than 7,000 frontline jobs.

FBU members are also worried about government proposals for police and crime commissioners to take over responsibility for the fire service, saying it would put the independence of rescuers at risk.

Firefighters “are coming to Westminster to talk some sense into MPs about the government’s senseless, dangerous agenda of cuts, cuts and more cuts,” said FBU general secretary Matt Wrack.

“And it’s no accident that, at the very time the government is cutting vital funding for the fire and rescue service, they are also trying to silence workers through the proposed Trade Union Bill.”
