Complaints raised by transgender people over the way they were treated by the Metropolitan police at an LGBT event in Parliament have prompted an internal investigation, MPs heard yesterday.
Labour MP Kerry McCarthy raised the incident, said to have occurred on February 4, in the Commons chamber, asking what training and advice was provided to staff on how to deal with transgender visitors.
She said she had received complaints from attendees at an LGBT history month event, who claimed that security guards at the Cromwell Green entrance “repeatedly addressed them as sir even though they made it quite clear they didn’t wish to be addressed in that way.”
She added: “The Met is actually looking at this. I think the House of Commons Commission referred it to the Met. Can you make sure they do not have to suffer such treatment in future?”
Liberal Democrat John Thurso, representing the Commission, confirmed the matter had been passed on to the Met against whose staff the complaints were made.
