Arts Ahead: Francis Bacon and the Masters

NORWICH EXHIBITION Francis Bacon and the Masters Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts Norfolk Road Until July 26

Bringing together over 100 major works by British painter Francis Bacon with old and modern masters including Velazquez, Rembrandt, Titian, Michelangelo, Rodin, Van Gogh, Picasso and Matisse, this exhibition explores Bacon’s obsession with the art of the past, examining how he consistently drew on the work of the greats as well as to the stylised forms of ancient Greek and Roman works.

The burning question is of course whether Bacon — who some regard as an over-hyped modernist — will withstand scrutiny in such august company. If he doesn’t match up, there’s some wonderful work from the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg on show to compensate.
