‘Blindsided’ Ashdown cries foul over pollsters

PADDY ASHDOWN bemoaned the inaccuracy of pre-election polls yesterday, which he blamed for having “killed” the Liberal Democrats.

The Lib Dem peer and former leader, who backtracked on a promise to eat his own hat if the shock exit polls were right, turned his fury on pollsters that all predicted the Tories and Labour were neck and neck.

Admitting he has been “blindsided” by the result which has left his party with only eight MPs, losing a colossal 49 seats, Lord Ashdown suggested more people would have voted Lib Dem if the polls had shown the real situation.

“The argument that we had to be there to moderate them (the Tories) would have had far greater traction,” he said.

The pollsters are facing an independent inquiry by the British Polling Council after almost every election poll during the campaign underestimated the Tories’ lead over Labour.
