Festival’s solidarity for left message

HUNDREDS rallied in support of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn at a left-wing festival in Southampton on Saturday.

The second annual Leftfest brought together campaigners and trade unionists, who gave messages of solidarity for the party leader in his fight against challenger Owen Smith.

Organiser Helen Field, of Unite Community Southampton, said: “Last year, when we held the first Leftfest, David Cameron was prime minister.

“Now it’s Theresa May. When we hold Leftfest Three, I expect Jeremy Corbyn to be prime minister of this country.”

Attendees heard radical numbers from the Southampton Red Stars choir followed by a wide variety of bands, including local Irish group The Croppies, who entertained the packed gathering in the sweltering heat.

Unite Community Southampton chairman Glyn Oliver said: “This has been a remarkable example of the left working together in Southampton, as we have been doing all year.

“While we have our differences, we all share the vision of a socialist Britain and will continue to work together towards it.”
