Burnham joins protest at hospital’s job cuts

STAFF at a West Midlands hospital where 10 per cent of jobs could be axed held a demonstration yesterday that was attended by Labour’s shadow health secretary Andy Burnham.

Mr Burnham was visiting Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley.

The hospital faces an annual cut in its budget of £12 million as the government continues its attack on the NHS even in the dying days of the coalition.

General union GMB staged a rally which was joined by Mr Burnham.

Stephanie Peacock, GMB regional political officer, said that one in 10 of the hospital’s 4,200 staff face the sack and that the cuts mean even bosses admit the hospital “can no longer guarantee safe and sustainable care.”

She said: “If the Tories are re-elected, people would have more chance of winning the lottery than seeing police patrolling their streets or seeing waiting lists in the NHS coming down.”
