Isis launches four-point attack on city of Ramadi

THE Islamic State militant group (Isis) launched a major attack on the Iraqi city of Ramadi today.

Isis fighters pounded the capital of the troubled Anbar province with mortar rounds, while clashes broke out all around one of the last urban areas in Anbar under government control.

“Isis launched a surprise attack from the north, west, east and south,” said a police spokesman.

“Clashes are ongoing around the city. A series of mortar attacks have targeted areas inside the city, including provincial council buildings and a police post.”

He added that Isis had also detonated car bombs targeting Iraqi security forces and that it was too early to estimate the number of casualties from the fighting around the city.

Parts of Anbar, which borders Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria, have been out of government control since January and fresh attacks in recent weeks have seen Isis extend its grip.
