Northern Ireland: Lawyer hails ruling that rights act applies to abortion cases

THE LAWYER for a young woman from Northern Ireland has hailed a British Court of Appeal ruling that the Human Rights Act applies to abortion law.

Angela Jackman, a partner at law firm Simpson Millar, represents a young woman and her mother known only as “A an B” who were forced to spend hundreds of pounds to travel to Manchester for a private abortion.

She vowed on Wednesday to take the case to the Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg in the light of the ruling.

Abortion in Northern Ireland is only legal if the life or long-term health of a pregnant woman is at risk.

Although the court dismissed the mother and daughter’s appeal against a ruling that they could not access NHS services in England, it disagreed with Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt’s position that the right to private and family life and the right not to be discriminated against did not apply.
