Japan: PM faces US base protest

JAPANESE Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was heckled yesterday by opponents of the US military presence during a commemoration of the Battle of Okinawa.

Speaking at a remembrance ceremony for the 200,000 people who died in the battle 70 years ago, Mr Abe faced shouts of “What are you doing here?” and “Go home!”

He said: “We hope to continue to do our best to lighten the burden of the US military bases on the Okinawans,” but indicated that the government would go ahead with its plan to keep the base in Okinawa.

Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga reiterated his demand that the base be moved out of the prefecture altogether, as opposed to the US plan to relocate it to a more remote site.

About half the 50,000 US troops in Japan are based in Okinawa. Service personnel have been accused of several brutal rapes and murders.
