FOOTBALL: The rainbow laces worn to show support for this week’s kick homophobia out of football campaign were on show for the first time on last Sunday.
The Cardiff Dragons beat Leftfooters 1-0 in the Gay Football Supporters Network (GFSN) league, with all 22 players wearing the laces.
GFSN chair Ed Connell said he was proud of the commitment shown by the teams.
“We’re very proud that our grassroots LGBT teams are the first to debut rainbow laces in games during this week of action,” he said.
“The GFSN members, teams and fangroups have campaigned against discrimination for many years and by supporting this campaign we are showing our commitment to kick homophobia out of football.”
FOOTBALL: Former Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has paid £2,100 for Denmark to participate in next month’s Homeless World Cup.
The team fly out to Chile next month to compete but were struggling to come up money needed.
When Agger heard about the problem he dug into his own pockets to pay the remaining amount.
Charity worker Frits Ahlstrom said: “I talked to Agger and told him that we still had 20,000 krone to go and he replied without hesitation: ‘I’ll give it you’.”
“There is no substitute for class and Daniel has it on as well as off the field — as a player and a person.”
CYCLING: Michal Kwiatkowski seized the lead in the Tour of Britain yesterday by stealing a stunning stage four victory in Bristol.
Poland’s Kwiatkowski (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) won the sprint for the line at the end of the 184.6-kilometre route from Worcester to take the yellow jersey.
Holland’s Albert Timmer (Giant-Shimano) was frustrated with second after being prominent throughout the stage and Belgium’s Dylan Teuns (BMC Racing) was third.
Bradley Wiggins (Team Sky) finished sixth.
