Mark Chapman reviews 'Maiden'

Jordan Reyne Maiden (Factory Nation) 5/5

THIS is the final EP in Jordan Reyne’s Maiden, Mother, Crone trilogy which, as anyone with any knowledge of neopaganism — or Terry Pratchett — will know, relates to the three aspects of the Goddess and other mystic things.

Reyne’s work is rich in magick and ritual but this is not the crystals and dreamcatchers stuff of Glasto hippy shops.

It’s the magick of the Wicker Man, Pan’s Labyrinth and Alan Moore’s “workings.”

This is old magick indeed — dark, earthy and carnal.Reyne has an intoxicating voice, ranging from a low, menacing purr redolent of Diamanda Galas, to icy-clear high notes and she uses the full range here.

The instrumentation weaves around the vocals in a rhythmic, recursive and elusive style that is not quite folk, Middle Eastern or ambient but definitely ritual.

Maiden stands up well alone, but for the full experience get hold of all three EPs.
