Thousands march for peace in Central African Republic

THOUSANDS of people braved the rain in the Central African Republic capital Bangui on Saturday to take part in a march for peace.

Heavily armed vigilante militias had clashed on Friday night in the streets of the capital’s Boy-Rabe district.

Christian anti-balaka militias had clashed with supporters of the mainly Muslim Seleka rebel coalition and fighting continued into Saturday morning.

Transitional president Catherine Samba-Panza told the peace rally that a new government would be formed “in the coming days.”

An African Union peacekeeping force spokesman said that its soldiers had been deployed to the entrances of the troubled suburb.

“There is a tense situation brewing in the neighbourhood,” he warned, saying two people had been killed in what appeared to be a “settling of scores.”

Representatives of the Seleka rebel coalition and anti-balaka forces signed a tentative ceasefire in July but tensions remain high in the country.
