Diary: Unite policy conference 4/7/2014

There are many hidden gems in Liverpool — and the Casa bar is one of the best.

In the aptly named Hope Street, it was set up by courageous Liverpool dockers who went on strike for 850 days over the single greatest principle in the labour and trade union movement — you don’t cross picket lines.

It is a charitable trust set up to further the hopes and aspirations of the people and alleviate poverty in the city.

A red star above the door welcomes visitors — including your intrepid Star team who went to pay homage on our last night in Liverpool.

Inside, the walls are covered in pictures of the Spanish civil war and newspaper cuttings telling tales of local working-class heroes who fought with the international brigade.

This is the place to be, to eat and drink, meet union comrades, plan campaigns, get welfare and community advice … and dance in the salsa bar at the back!

And if you want to relive those extraordinary strike days, watch Jimmy McGovern’s Dockers, scripted by those who took part, or The Flickering Flame by Ken Loach. Then visit the Casa.
