SATURDAY May 9 will mark 70 years since the nazis surrendered to the Red Army — and the Soviet War Memorial Trust Fund will team up with Southwark Council to mark the occasion.
A solemn ceremony to honour the men and women who defeated fascism will take place at 11am at the war memorial in Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park, London SE1, beside the Imperial War Museum.
Southwark Mayor Sunil Chopra said: “The first Victory Day may well have been an experience of euphoria, but we must never forget the sacrifice of the millions of Soviet citizens who paid for our freedom with their lives.
“I ask that all who continue to cherish democracy join me in standing shoulder to shoulder at the Soviet War Memorial on May 9.”
The gathering will bring together politicians, diplomats and veterans of both the Red Army and Britain’s Arctic Convoy, who risked their lives to supply the Soviet Union during the war.
Soviet War Memorial Trust Fund chairman Philip Matthews said it was a chance to “remember once again the debt we owe to the peoples of the USSR.”
