Con-Dems refuse to rescue NHS from dodgy trade deal

TORY and Lib Dem MEPs are out on a limb in their support of a dodgy trade deal that will allow transnationals to sue governments if they don’t get their way.

A survey found that every party representing England, Scotland and Wales other than the coalition parties was in favour of exempting the NHS from the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).

Only two of the Tories’ 19 MPs bothered responding to the survey, commissioned by trade union Unite.

Labour, the Greens, Plaid Cymru and the SNP all re-affirmed their opposition — and even Ukip have jumped on the bandwagon.

The Lib Dems’ one remaining Euro MP, south-east England rep Catherine Bearder, reportedly has no objections to the inclusion of the NHS.

The survey followed a poll of marginal Tory seats which found 68 per cent were opposed to the inclusion of the NHS in the deal. Opposition was highest from those planning on voting for Labour or Ukip, 78 per cent and 77 per cent respectively, and just 23 per cent of Conservative voters supported inclusion.

TTIP is the biggest bilateral trade deal ever negotiated, and threatens to make privatisation of the NHS irreversible by putting the profits of corporations before democratic decisions and national sovereignty.

And in a sick twist, the power to sue a government would be granted by a secret court of three trade lawyers.

Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said: “The Tories and the Liberal Democrats are isolated and on the wrong side of public opinion.

“They believe that allowing US corporations to override Britain’s sovereignty over the NHS is more important than the concerns of the British people.

“Our country is united against this trade deal and the disastrous impact it will have on our health.

“It is time for David Cameron to wake up, stand up for Britain and exempt health from TTIP.”

Writing on the Left Futures website last week, Labour MP Michael Meacher warned that the Slovakian, German, Spanish and Australian governments had recently been sued by transnationals in protest at interventionist policies. “The NHS must be exempted from TTIP,” he urged.
