Bend it like Weir as Arsenal miss chance to go second

Arsenal 1-2 Liverpool

Arsenal were fortunate to lose by one goal yesterday as Liverpool squandered countless opportunities in their 2-1 victory.

Fara Williams opened the scoring against her former club inside the opening 10 minutes and it looked like the FA Cup winners would go on to dominate at home.

Shanice van de Sanden found the top corner from the edge of the box 11 minutes to draw Liverpool level.

And Caroline Weir’s free-kick 13 minutes from time left Sari van Veenendaal rooted to the spot, to give Scott Rodger’s side all three points.

Arsenal had chances in what was a pulsating end-to-end match but it just wasn’t to be, hitting the post with minutes left and Asisat Oshoala, Jordan Nobbs and Casey Stoney all having chances in added time to salvage a point but Liverpool held on.

Had the Gunners won, they would have moved up to second. Instead, they trail Manchester City by four points with a game in hand.

Liverpool on the other hand  move within four points of the Gunners and stay within reach of a Champions League place, currently held by Chelsea.
