Freedom Riders mark year-long campaign

YORKSHIRE’S “Freedom Riders” staged a rally in Barnsley yesterday to mark the first anniversary of their campaign to regain concessionary travel.

Transport authorities in South Yorkshire axed concessionary travel for pensioners and disabled people last year.Barnsley Retired People’s Action Group responded with a campaign of direct action and defiance, boarding trains en masse at Barnsley station and refusing to pay.

Their action won back concessionary travel for disabled people, but the campaign for pensioners’ concessionary travel continues.

More than 100 Freedom Riders and supporters gathered at Barnsley station yesterday for a march and rally marking one year since the campaign was launched.

Speakers included representatives from general union Unite, train drivers’ union Aslef, Barnsley Trades Union Council and Bakers’ union BFAWU.
