Welsh trade unionist dies in car crash

A TRADE unionist has tragically died aged 50 in a car crash in south-west Wales.

Roger Bevan, a Unison area organiser from Swansea, was pronounced dead at the scene on Tuesday afternoon near Cilcennin, Lampeter.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash involving his VW Golf and a Honda Civic driven by a 21-year-old man who has been in stable condition in hospital.

Dominic MacAskill, a close friend and fellow Unison member, said: “Roger was a person who lived life to the full. He was a man of passion and morals who loved his work because he knew that it made a difference.

“He was a comrade, friend and support to many and he will be dearly missed.”

Mr Bevan was a long-time activist with the National Union of Public Employees (NUPE) before joining Unison.

A Unison Wales spokesperson described him as a “talented” trade unionist as well as “a passionate political activist.”
