Back Gavlar to triumph at Newmarket today

Our tipster casts his expert eye over the pick of the weekend’s meets

There are plenty of big betting races this weekend and the Betfred Cesarewitch Handicap over a stamina sapping two-and-a-quarter miles at Newmarket looks sure to attract plenty of punters and I fancy a huge run from the well-drawn Gavlar (each-way).

The lower the box the better in this event as they take a single turn right-handed into the home stretch and if you are drawn in the high 20s or 30s a jockey needs to decide to get a position early on from the wide outside and use up valuable energy resources.

Gavlar, hugely progressive this season since being put over a distance of ground, has drawn stall two and you forget his run behind favourite Low Key here last time out when he simply wasn’t suited by the slowly run nature of the race.

He is reunited with Callum Shepherd who takes that valuable 7lbs off and there will be far worse 33/1 shots in the field.

Of those at the top end of the market I have most respect for Heartbreak City after a clear-cut and indeed impressive success at York and he too is well drawn in stall nine but my original fancies Montefeltro, Communicator and Steve Rogers are all badly drawn high and wide.

Just about 40 minutes earlier I confidently expect the exciting and unbeaten Emotionless to see of Aidan O’Brien’s Air Force Blue in the Dewhurst Stakes at 3.10.

He absolutely toyed with the highly thought of Ibn Malik in the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster and the reaction of his partner William Buick said it all as he is rarely as animated as he was when he dismounted from this hugely exciting son of Shamardal.

Over at York, The Coral Sprint Handicap Trophy at 3.25 looks as competitive as ever, but if there remains enough juice in the ground then Highland Acclaim looks sure to go close.

You can forget his run in the Ayr Gold Cup last time out as he fell out of the stalls and he remains feasibly well weighted off a mark of 97.

The biggest danger could come from Aetna as the mare has her right conditions for the first time in a long time even if she isn’t especially well weighted.

Also at the Knavesmire, have a second look at Navajo Chief in the finale at 5.10.

The Timothy Jarvis-runner has a tremendous record at the track and having dropped from a handicap high mark of 104 to 79 here, his rider’s 5lbs claim he looks much better weighted than either Coreggio or Camagueyana.

Finally in the evening at Chelmsford, Thawraat could be another one for the Godolphin team in the one mile handicap at 7.40.
