Watson out in front for deputy role

TOM WATSON is leading the battle to become Labour’s deputy leader — but could lose out on second-preference votes, according a poll published yesterday.

The survey of more than 1,000 Labour List readers put Mr Watson in front with 33 per cent, ahead of Stella Creasy on 27 per cent.

Caroline Flint was trailing in third place on 17 per cent, a further sign of the weakening influence of Labour’s Progress faction as Liz Kendall lags behind in the leadership race.

Angela Eagle, who is backed by the Campaign for Labour Party Democracy, is on 10 per cent ahead of Ben Bradshaw on 6 per cent.

Although Mr Watson is ahead, Labour List said: “With Bradshaw, Flint and to some extent Creasy all seen as nominally on the right of the party, we might expect that their supporters’ second preferences would transfer to one another.

“Watson, therefore, could need a larger lead on first preferences to emerge with victory.”

The poll was published before leadership and deputy leadership hustings being held in the Midlands this weekend.
